Compare crops before you plant

A useful crop comparison does not name a universal winner. It shows which crop fits your field constraints, rotation, operation, and market plan, then identifies the evidence you still need.

What a crop comparison should answer

No single score decides

The better crop is the one that fits the field and the farm business after you account for water, soil, timing, equipment, labor, buyers, and risk. A high reference yield or price cannot cancel a hard field constraint.

A useful comparison has a boundary

Regional comparison pages can screen a crop pair against representative conditions. They cannot measure your parcel, verify a buyer, or forecast your profit. Treat the result as a shortlist for field checks.

Soil tests still matter

A regional crop page cannot replace a laboratory soil test or field inspection. Do not turn a displayed pH, water need, or drainage label into a fertilizer, lime, or irrigation prescription.

Use regional cost and return data to frame questions, not to publish a farm-specific profit. The USDA Economic Research Service reports that its commodity accounts are average estimates at regional or national levels and that production practices vary across farms.

Use break-even inputs

For a real decision, enter your expected yield, sale price, variable costs, land charge, labor, machinery, storage, financing, and risk assumptions in a transparent budget. Compare break-even yield and price, not just gross revenue.

USDA NASS Quick Stats can provide official statistics by commodity, location, and time period. It does not tell you whether a buyer will accept your grade or whether your logistics can reach the market. Confirm those terms locally.
